Do you have a "place?"

Last weekend, hubby and I took the kids for a bike ride down on Alki. Alki is a beautiful stretch of beach along the Puget Sound that is only about 5 minutes from our house. On a clear day, the snow capped Olympics are visible on one side, while the city skyline is visible on the other. Despite its close proximity, we haven't been down there much these past few months.

As we drove along the beach looking for a parking spot, I took in the beauty of Alki. I've always appreciated what a beautiful spot it is, but that day I noticed it in a new way. I realized how ridiculous it is that I live so close to this beach, but visit it less than once a month. I also noticed this amazing feeling of peace and happiness that comes over me as we drive along the beach. I don't know if it's the briney salt air, or the tranquility of watching the ferries cross under the Cascade mountains, but the scenery gives me an immediate feeling that weight is being lifted off of my shoulders. I used to get this same feeling when we drove along Route 28 on our way to the Catskill mountains. I haven't felt this feeling in a long time.

At the same time, hubby turns to me and says, "I've really missed this place, we should come here more often...it's so relaxing." So true, hubby, so true. I think we've found our new "place." Do you have a place that does this to you? I'd love to hear about it. In the meantime, here are some pictures from our day on the beach. (and since the mountains weren't visible the day we were on Alki, I've thrown in one extra from a few months ago).

Happy New Year!

...that's Chinese New Year to be exact. Tomorrow marks the first day in the Year of the Ox. Noodles and I had a little fun today making a snack treat in the shape of the Chinese character for Ox, and I thought it would be fun to read what Chinese astrology had to say about the year ahead. What I found was really interesting:

"The Ox is the sign of prosperity through fortitude and hard work. This powerful sign is a born leader, being quite dependable and possessing an innate ability to achieve great things. The Ox is unswervingly patient, tireless in their work, and capable of enduring any amount of hardship without complaint.
The Ox works hard, patiently, and methodically, with original intelligence and reflective thought. These people enjoy helping others. Behind this tenacious, laboring, and self-sacrificing exterior lies an active mind."

Interesting stuff, no? Given the current condition of our economy and the inspiring call to action we all heard from our new president, I found it fitting that this be the character we aspire to this year. Just a little something to chew on.
